Yervand Yerznkyan: Armenia ‘on edge of abyss'
Armenia is standing “on the edge of the abyss", composer, conductor, People's Artist of Armenia Yervand Yerznkyan told reporters at a meeting of intellectuals on Saturday, calling for efforts to find a way out of the difficult situation in the country.
"People are being forced out of their homes. This problem must be fixed, but the government is not able to do so," he stated.
According to the composer, many people who do not join opposition protests do care about the homeland. Yerznkyan says he is among those people. According to the intellectual, the cold weather and the coronavirus pandemic simply prevent many people from taking to the streets.
To a reporter’s remark that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Monday is set to travel to Moscow, where he, according to media reports, will sign an agreement on territorial concessions to Azerbaijan for the return of Armenian prisoners of war, Yervand Yerznkyan said there are no guarantees that he won’t sign such a document after the November 10 Artsakh deal.
"Can we prevent him from going?... Should we shed blood? We need a person who can take the lead of it all. I hope he [Pashinyan] will not sign a very bad document," Yerznkyan said.
Yerznkyan believes the most correct and humane option is for Pashinyan to submit resignation.
