Shakira sells rights to all 145 of her songs
Shakira has sold the rights to 145 of her songs, becoming the latest singer to make money by doing so, Daily Mail reports.
The Colombian singer, 43, has relinquished the rights to 100 per cent of her back catalogue to Hipgnosis Songs Fund it was revealed on Wednesday, the company recently announced the acquisition of Neil Young's 1,180 songs.
It is the latest in a series of acquisitions from the fund run by Merck Mercuriadis, a former manager of Sir Elton John and Pet Shop Boys.
While it is known Hipgnosis Songs has acquired all of the music publishing rights to her back catalogue, the financial details of their deal has not been disclosed.
The acquisition includes Shakira's hits including Whenever, Wherever, Hips Don't Lie, and the official 2010 Fifa World Cup song Waka Waka (This Time For Africa).
Gushing about the deal, Shakira said in a statement: "Being a songwriter is an accomplishment that I consider equal to and perhaps even greater than being a singer and an artist.
"At eight-years-old - long before I sang - I wrote to make sense of the world.
"Each song is a reflection of the person I was at the time that I wrote it, but once a song is out in the world, it belongs not only to me but to those who appreciate it as well.
"I'm humbled that songwriting has given me the privilege of communicating with others, of being a part of something bigger than myself."
Shakira has joined the likes of Young, former Fleetwood Mac lead guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, Blondie singer Debbie Harry and Mark Ronson in selling rights to the fund.
