Armenian expert Suren Sargsyan stresses need for pragmatic foreign policy
Armenia must pursue pragmatic foreign policy, according to expert on international relations Suren Sargsyan.
“Our foreign policy must be pragmatic, period!
We must act in line with the following principles, rules and priorities:
1. First, the interests of Armenia.
2. Second, the interests of our strategic ally (fortunately, our interests and positions on international issues almost completely coincide).
3. Relations with the capitals of strategic importance for us: Tbilisi, Tehran, Washington, Beijing, Brussels (EU), Paris.
4. More friends, few enemies. We need to work with the capitals with which it is possible to establish relations, for instance, Al Riyadh, Islamabad. If you cannot befriend it, position yourself like it, until the end.
5. Have a clear strategy for key regions, for example, the Middle East.
6. Pragmatic and principled foreign policy along with flexible diplomacy; these do not contradict each other.
7. Use all your foreign policy tools – the Diaspora, lobby, church, etc.
8. Always know what you want from the world. For example, we do not know it at present.
9. Take into account the fact that all countries in your region are in competition with each other. You have two options. You either have to fall at someone’s feet or take advantage of that competition. Only pragmatism will help us, nothing else.
And most importantly! Always know that no one's obliged to support you,” he wrote on Facebook on Thursday.
