Signed Michael Jordan card sells for $1.44 million at auction
A signed Michael Jordan card fetched $1.44 million Thursday night, making it the most expensive Jordan card ever sold at auction, Barron's magazine reports.
The 1997 Upper Deck Game Jersey Michael Jordan card features a signature by Jordan in thin blue marker, and a sizable sample of the jersey Jordan wore in the 1992 NBA All-Star Game.
The card was eighth of only 23 that were produced. It attracted 69 registered phone bidders, according to Dallas-based Heritage Auctions, which handled the sale. The auction house declined to disclose the identity of the winning bidder.
Jordan’s pieces of memorabilia have seen their collectible values rise in the past couple of years, especially after ESPN aired The Last Dance, a documentary series about the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls and Jordan’s renowned career, in 2020.
A pair of Jordan’s game-worn sneakers, Air Jordan 1 High, fetched $615,000 at a Christie’s auction in August, setting a price record for a pair of sneakers. In December, a 1997 Michael Jordan Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems card offered by Heritage Auctions, realized a then-record of $915,000.
Just last weekend, a Michael Jordan 1986 Fleer rookie card went for $738,000 at an auction by New Jersey-based Goldin Auctions, making it the most expensive card of its kind ever sold at auction.
