Armenia saw a significant decrease in both imports and exports volumes in 2020, according to Head of the Customs Statistics and Revenue Registration Department of the State Revenue Committee (SRC), Mnatsakan Sharafyan.

The country’s exports fell by 7%, while imports – by 17.5% last year, the official told a news conference on Friday.

Referring to the decision to ban the import of Turkish goods, he noted that in 2020 25 billion drams in tax revenues were generated from the import of Turkish goods, however he disagreed with the claims that the ban in the first half of 2021 will lead to a decrease of 12 billion drams in tax revenues.

Head of the SRC Customs Control Department Artem Karapetyan said that some attempts to import Turkish goods across the Georgian border were recorded in 2020, adding those attempts were thwarted and the goods were removed from the country.

Karapetyan noted that they are aware of all the risks and use their entire toolkit to fight against attempted imports of Turkish goods

According to him, shortly after the entry into force of the ban on the import of Turkish products, they made changes to the list of those goods, adding new ones to it.

Mnatsakan Sharafyan said in turn that clothes, citrus fruits, aluminum rods, detergents and cleaning products were mainly imported from Turkey to Armenia.
