Georgia's parliament approves new cabinet
Georgia's parliament on Monday voted to approve a new cabinet led by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, the local sources reported.
During a special session, the lawmakers of the Georgian parliament confirmed the new prime minister and cabinet with 89 votes in favor and 2 against. According to the Georgian constitution, a new prime minister needs to secure a minimum of 76 votes in the parliament for his cabinet to be approved.
Lawmakers from the United National Movement party and other opposition parties did not attend the voting. There are only two new ministers, Defense Minister Juansher Burchuladze and Minister of Regional Development & Infrastructure Irakli Karseladze, in the approved cabinet.
The Georgian ruling party nominated Irakli Garibashvili to take up premiership on Feb. 18, following Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia's resignation earlier the same day.
Irakli Garibashvili, 38, was appointed the country's defence minister in September 2019 and continued his role after the 2020 parliamentary elections. Previously, he served as prime minister between November 2013 and December 2015.
