Residents of Armenian town block interstate highway, demand clarifications on border issue
A group of residents of the town of Ijevan in Armenia’s Tavush Province on Tuesday blocked Yerevan-Noyemberyan interstate highway, demanding a meeting with Tavush Governor Hayk Chobanyan. They expect clarifications from the governor amid concerns over the latest media reports related to the border issue.
After keeping the road blocked for nearly 20 minutes, the protesters opened it, but unveiled their plans to close it again until the governor meets them.
"We want explanations from the governor of Tavush to understand the fate of our lands. We inherited them from our ancestors, today there are concerns that these territories may be handed over to the enemy [Azerbaijan]. We need clarifications,” one of the protesting residents said.
“When they announce that they will not surrender an inch of land from Tavush Province to the enemy, I want to understand where Tavush starts and ends according to them. We should understand whether the territory of Tavush Province perceived by the governor and by us is the same or different,” the protester added.
