Arman Arakelyan, who was convicted for murder of Azerbaijani in Russia, extradited to Armenia
Arman Arakelyan, who was convicted for the murder of an Azerbaijani in Russia, was extradited to Armenia to serve the remaining term, his lawyer Artur Dashyan told Pastinfo.
Arakelyan was sentenced to 18 years in prison in Russia and has already served six years in a Murmansk prison.
The lawyer said they had been fighting for four years for the extradition of the man to Armenia to serve the remaining term, adding his life was in danger in Russian prison due to possible revenge of Azerbaijanis.
"That is why we have constantly stressed the fact that Arman should be transferred to Armenia as soon as possible, as it was not a standard crime, but a problem related to Armenian-Azerbaijani relations. The dispute was against the background of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations," Dashyan said.
The issue of Arman Arakelyan’s extradition to Armenia was raised during the tenure of various ministers. Before Rustam Badasyan was appointed Armenia’s justice minister, agreements had been reached with various instances on the matter, with negotiations held with the prime minister's spokesman, but the process was delayed. According to the lawyer, a consensus was reached after certain steps, and Badasyan signed a document on transferring Arman Arakelyan to Armenia to serve the rest of his sentence.
