Joe Biden intends to recognize the Armenian Genocide, spokesperson says
US President Joe Biden plans to make good on his pre-election promise to recognize the Armenian Genocide at the hands of the Turks during World War I, a White House spokesperson has told EKkathimerini.com news outlet. Replying to a request for reaction to a letter initiated by Senator Bob Menenez and co-signed by 36 other Senators of both parties, the spokesperson said the Biden administration has committed to ensuring that such atrocities will not be repeated and that a crucial part of this is the recognition of past atrocities.
As reported earlier, Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Bob Menendez led 37 of his Senate colleagues on Friday in requesting the Biden administration join the U.S. Congress in officially recognizing the Ottoman Empire's genocide against the Armenian people.
Earlier a senior administration official had commented told The Hill that the US "must never forget or remain silent about this horrific campaign. And we will forever respect the perseverance of the Armenian people in the wake of such a great tragedy.” The official added that the Biden administration “is committed to promoting respect for human rights and ensuring such atrocities are not repeated. A critical part of that is acknowledging history.”
