Today is the start of astronomical spring
In 2021, the spring equinox occurs on Saturday, March 20. This event marks the astronomical first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The equinox is the precise moment the sun's rays shine directly on the Earth's equator.
At the equinox, Earth’s two hemispheres are receiving the sun’s rays equally. Night and day are often said to be equal in length. In fact, the word equinox comes from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night).
The spring equinox has been celebrated for centuries by different cultures, as it has become a symbol for rebirth, fertility and new beginnings. People often gather to watch the equinox in different parts of the world.
