Armenian National Commission for UNESCO deplores destruction of Armenian monuments by Azeris
The Armenian National Commission for UNESCO strongly condemns yet another act of cultural crime by Azerbaijan. The statement by the Commission came after BBC investigation revealed the complete destruction of St. Astvatsatsin Church in Mekhakavan (Jabrayil), when the region was taken by Azeri forces during the recent war in Nagorno Karabakh.
"The destruction is complete. The Armenian monuments of Artsakh under Azerbaijani occupation are vandalized and destroyed in ISIS-style. The disappeared Armenian church became a subject of Azeri vandalism," the Commission tweeted on Thursday, calling for the attention and prompt action of UNESCO and Blue Shield, international network of committees protecting heritage in crisis.
To remind, in its documentary, BBC correspondent Jonah Fisher investigated the disappearance of an Armenian church that came under the control of Azerbaijani Armed Forces in the recent Nagorno-Karabakh war. An online video showed the church was intact when Azerbaijan took control of the region, while the recent satellite images proved the church was destroyed.
