Armenian opposition MP calls for new ‘military-political alliance’ with Russia
MP Naira Zohrabyan from Armenia’s opposition Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) on Friday called for a new “military-political alliance” with Russia amid the challenges facing the country.
Referring to the Artsakh parliament’s decision to make Russian the second official language in the country, the lawmaker stated after the loss of 75% of Artsakh, Russia is now considered the guarantor of Artsakh's security.
“Taking into account all the challenges facing Armenia… we believe that the time has come to conclude a new military-political alliance with Russia. We will speak about this alliance in detail in the near future," Zohrabyan told a news briefing at the National Assembly.
Separately, the MP said she is not fully convinced that snap parliamentary elections will held in Armenia on 20 June, citing Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s “contradictory” statements.
"I cannot rest assured that tomorrow or the next day they will not announce that there will be no early elections for some reason, such as the surge in coronavirus cases or border tensions,” she said.
Zohrabyan noted It is early to talk about the proportional representation, adding only their party list will be led by Gagik Tsarukyan.
“Discussions are underway and there is no final decision yet. It will not be a state secret who will head the PAP headquarters. Our compatriots will definitely know who is on the lists. Rest assured that dignified members will be on the list," she added.
