Fashion designer Carla Zampatti dies in hospital one week after fall
Australia’s most celebrated fashion designer Carla Zampatti has died at age 78. The Sydney Morning Herald reported. Ms Zampatti died in St Vincent’s Hospital on Saturday, one week after she was knocked unconscious by a fall at a gala opera premiere on Sydney Harbour.
Beloved as a trailblazer for women and “the matriarch” of Australian fashion, Ms Zampatti’s death prompted an outpouring of grief across the arts, fashion and political spectrums on Saturday.
Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison released an official statement marking the death of the designer, describing her contribution to the nation as “timeless, just like her designs.”
Ms Zampatti was attending the opening night of La Traviata at Mrs Macquaries Point last Friday when she fell on the bottom two steps of a staircase.
She was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital, where she spent the week in intensive care, before she succumbed to her injuries on Saturday morning.
