Armenian MP calls for international arrest warrant against Azeri generals
Armenia should issue an international arrest warrant for the Azerbaijani military’s top brass for crimes committed during the recent Artsakh war, independent MP Taguhi Tovmasyan said on Tuesday, addressing the parliament.
She referred to the opening of a "park of trophies" in Baku on Tuesday showcasing military equipment seized from the Armenian forces during the war.
"The infamous park sparked much debate today, but what are we doing apart from talking? I think we need to take legal action. We must create a legal counterbalance and respond to [Azerbaijani President Ilham] Aliyev in his own manner. So far, by the order of Aliyev, an international arrest warrant has been issued for some 300 citizens of Armenia. What measures has the Prosecutor's Office of Armenia taken in this regard?” the MP said.
Tovmasyan underlined that the names of the 300 citizens who are wanted by Azerbaijan have not yet been disclosed.
"We have not seen the Prosecutor General's Office taking any step to issue an international arrest warrant for Azerbaijani generals. After all, it is not a hard task to provide evidence that during the war Azerbaijan committed various crimes and atrocities that are unacceptable under a number of conventions and laws," he said.
Taguhi Tovmasyan noted Armenia has issued an international arrest warrant only for an Azerbaijani football commentator so far.
"Now we are free to launch an investigation and to create difficulties for the military-political leadership of Azerbaijan, so that they cannot move around freely. Why have we become so miserable and taken up a defensive position only? We have lost the war, but it does not mean that we should not create legal counterbalances," the lawmaker stated.
