Opposition MP says electoral system changes sought by authorities ‘have nothing to do’ with Armenia’s interests
According to the calculations, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan should resign on April 25 or 26, MP Gevorg Gorgisyan from the opposition Bright Armenia Party told reporters in the parliament on Monday.
According to him, if the ruling bloc moves to introduce a package of amendments to the Electoral Code to the parliament, it would be another “stupidity”.
“It would be absurd to make changes to the Electoral Code after Pashinyan's resignation. I hope that the authorities will not make such an extremely stupid move; voters have at least adapted to the changes already made and should go to the polls under the existing system,” he noted.
The MP said that after the resignation of the government, the parliament will continue to work until snap elections slated for June 20.
To the observation that changes to the Electoral Code were among the promises of the current authorities and they may, nevertheless, try to do so, Gevorg Gorgisyan said that the authorities did not fulfill any of their promises, stating they just want to “justify” the grants awarded to them.
“Whatever they are doing now are aimed at justifying the grants they have eaten. The actions of the authorities have nothing to do with the interests of the Republic of Armenia. I think that Nikol Pashinyan no longer shows adequate behavior,” he said.
Separately, Gorgisyan deplored the developments around the Supreme Judicial Council and the dismissal of Ruben Vardazaryan as its chief as a “senseless waste of energy”.
“Since coming to power, they have been making changes in the judicial system, fighting windmills in the judiciary, and as a result, we get what they don't want to get. All this already resembles an absurd comedy,” he said, promising to start a “building process” from July.
