Lawyer: Armenian president must apply to Constitutional Court over interim PM-related dispute
Armenian President Armen Sarkissian must apply to the Constitutional Court to settle the dispute over the interim prime minister, according to lawyer Tigran Atanesyan.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced his resignation on Sunday to pave the way for the snap parliamentary elections slated for 20 June. Meanwhile, he stated that he will continue to perform the duties of caretaker prime minister before the elections, citing the applicable law and the Constitution.
However, many lawyers claim that Pashinyan is not entitled to serve as interim prime minister after his resignation.
“The dispute over the interim prime minister does not end. As the opinions sharply contradict each other and the ruling bloc excludes any constructive discussion, the legal solution of the issue is within the powers of the country’s president,” Atanesyan wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.
“He can, and in my opinion, must apply to the Constitutional Court in line with Article 168 (Part 4) of the Constitution and Article 75 of the law “On the Constitutional Court” to find out whether the resigned prime minister can serve as caretaker prime minister or not,” he said.
