Political scientist comments on meeting of Chinese ambassador with Armenia’s ex-President Serzh Sargsyan
Political scientist Stepan Danielyan has commented on the meeting of the Chinese ambassador to Armenia with former President Serzh Sargsyan on Tuesday.
In a public post on Facebook, he stated China made a “very rude démarche” meeting with Serzh Sargsyan, who considers the current Armenian leader a capitulator.
“During the meeting, they discussed relations between Armenia and China with the leader of the force, who is not even represented in the National Assembly.
“In general, China pursues very cautious and restrained policies and attaches great importance to symbolic gestures. It was not a symbolic gesture, but a "blow with a stone", a slap in the face, and, interestingly, it coincided with the developments around the Meghri customs,” Danielyan said.
“At the moment, when the opening of the north-south road corridor is important for us and we must push ahead with it as opposed to the east-west highway, which Turkey and Azerbaijan are interested in, such a step has bad consequences for two reasons:
“1. First, China plans to invest about half a trillion dollars in Iran, a significant part of which is related to logistics projects, of course, the opportunities of the border with Armenia are also taken into account.
“2. The opening of the north-south road corridor is also important for us in terms of security, because at any time Turkey can send troops to Meghri, arguing that it has interests and there is a certain danger to its communication system, and in this case Iran and China can counterbalance Turkey, because they also have their own interests in the same area, which Iran has already officially announced,” the political scientist wrote.
