National Assembly dissolved after failing to elect a prime minister twice
Armenia's National Assembly failed on Monday to elect a prime minister in accordance with a political agreement for the second time. The candidacy of Nikol Pashinyan, nominated by the ruling "My Step" faction received one in favor and one against votes, while 76 lawmakers abstained from the voting.
As a result, Pashinian’s formal bid did not gather enough votes and the National Assembly will, therefore, be dissolved by virtue of law.
Pashinyan's technical nomination came after a political agreement was reached to hold snap parliamentary elections in June 20 to diffuse the ongoing political crisis. According to Armenian legislation, elections can be held after the PM resigns and the parliament fails twice to elect a new one. The two opposition factions in the parliament had said they didn't plan to nominate their candidates for prime minister in line with the reached political agreement.
