Pashinyan formally nominated as PM candidate for second time
The Armenian National Assembly on Monday kicked off a special session, with the issue of electing a new prime minister on the agenda.
The parliament is set to hold a second round of vote on Nikol Pashinyan’s candidacy as the country’s new prime minister formally nominated by the ruling My Step bloc.
Pashinyan stepped down in late April to diffuse the political crisis in the country through snap parliamentary elections unofficially slated for June 20. Under the Armenian law, elections can be held after the PM resigns and the parliament twice fails to elect a new one. The legislative body is then dissolved and early parliamentary elections are scheduled.
Earlier on May 3, the parliament rejected Pashinyan’s candidacy in a vote of 1 in favor, 3 against and 75 abstentions.
Last week, the ruling bloc said it would abstain from voting in favor of Pashinyan in line with the political arrangement to hold early elections.
