More than 20 killed in Gaza Strip air strikes after Hamas fires rockets towards Jerusalem
Palestinian militants launched rockets from Gaza and Israel unleashed new air strikes against them in the early hours of Tuesday, according to Sky news report.
The latest moves come amid soaring tensions in Jerusalem and days of clashes at an important mosque in the holy city. Twenty-two people, including nine children, were killed in Gaza overnight, most of them as a result of Israeli strikes. More than 700 Palestinians were hurt in clashes with Israeli security forces in 24 hours.
Israel's military said six Israeli civilians were injured by rocket fire on Tuesday morning. Earlier, rockets were launched minutes after a Hamas ultimatum passed for Israel to withdraw forces from flashpoints in the city. Hamas claimed responsibility and called it retaliation for Israeli "crimes and aggression".
