Armenia officially applies to CSTO over Azerbaijani encroachment
At a Security Council meeting on Thursday, Armenia’s interim Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the situation at the border section close to Sev Lich (Black Lake) in Syunik Province and the surrounding area remains explosive.
As reported earlier on Wednesday, the Azerbaijani forces crossed the state border of the Republic of Armenia and advanced as far as 3.5 kilometers in that section, trying to surround and siege the lake.
Pashinyan said nearly 250 Azerbaijani troops remain in the territory of Armenia, particularly in certain parts of Syunik and Gegharkunik Provinces.
Referring to the measures being taken in the current situation, Pashinyan stated: “The situation is fully in line with Article 2, Paragraph 2 of the Collective Security Treaty, which says that in case of threat to security, territorial integrity and sovereignty of one or several member states, the member states shall immediately launch the mechanism of joint consultations to take measures to eliminate the menace.”
Based on this, Pashinyan instructed Acting Foreign Minister Ara Aivazian, Acting Defense Minister Vagharshak Harutyunyan and Secretary of the Security Council Armen Grigoryan to launch consultations with the CSTO in line with Article 2 of the Collectives Security Treaty to coordinate the positions of the CSTO member states and take measures to eliminate the threat.
