Macron demands immediate withdrawal of Azerbaijani troops from Armenia
The Élysée Palace on Thursday issued a statement on Azerbaijan’s illegal incursion into Syunik Province of Armenia.
On Wednesday morning the Azerbaijani military crossed the state border of Armenia close to Sev Lich (Black Lake) in Syunik and advanced as far as 3.5 kilometers in an effort to surround the lake.
The statement of the Élysée Palace said on May 13, French President Emmanuel Macron held a telephone conversation with Armenia’s caretaker Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to discuss the developments in Syunik.
Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to the territorial integrity of Armenia and stressed the need for the immediate withdrawal of the Azerbaijani troops from the territory of Armenia.
“France hopes that the tense situation can be resolved through the United Nations Security Council to restore stability and security in this region,” the statement said.
Macron also took to Facebook to express France’s support for Armenia in the Armenian language.
“The Azerbaijani armed forces have crossed into Armenia’s territory. They must withdraw immediately. I say again to the Armenian people: France stands with you in solidarity and will continue to do so,” he wrote.
