Nikol Pashinyan and state interests ‘incompatible’ – Armen Gevorgyan
Armenia’s former Deputy Prime Minister Armen Gevorgyan, who heads the election campaign headquarters of the Armenia bloc, on Thursday deplored the new document between Armenia and Azerbaijan that could be signed.
At today’s cabinet meeting, caretaker Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed the authenticity of a draft document that had been partially published by Armenia's former Ambassador to the Holy See Mikayel Minasyan on his Telegram channel on Wednesday evening. Pashinyan said the new deal is “fully consistent with the interests of Armenia”, adding if Azerbaijan implements the agreements that are stipulated in the document, he will sign it.
The redacted document calls for the creation of a joint commission to demarcate the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“The documents that have been signed so far and are being prepared for signing are illegal, these types of documents do not exist in our legal framework,” Gevorgyan told reporters.
He stressed that state borders cannot be determined by any statements, but by interstate agreements.
“I think the political forces, the authorities must realize this,” Gevorgyan said.
He also stated the preconditions set forth for the signing of the document must be made public.
“We have seen just a part of the document which already raises concerns. Can you imagine that during the pre-election period the authorities are discussing with the enemy a document that is fateful for our statehood, but we do not know what kind of document it is? This is simply absurd,” he said.
“Let's record that Nikol Pashinyan and state interests are incompatible,” Gevorgyan noted.
