Edgar Ghazaryan: Armenia has never seen change of power through elections
Elections in Armenia have never led to a change of power, according to former Chief of Staff of the Constitutional Court Edgar Ghazaryan.
"Armenia has never seen a change of power through elections. Elections are never held for transfer of power. Elections are held to retain power, especially when they are initiated by the authorities and are early elections,” he wrote on Facebook on Monday.
His comments came after the early results of Sunday’s snap parliamentary elections showed Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract Party leading with 53.92% of the vote.
“As I predicted and warned months ago, the process of yet another overthrow of the legitimately elected government and usurpation of power has been completed, in connection with which we should congratulate its initiators and implementers – Nikol Pashinyan, Armen Sarkissian, Gagik Tsarukyan and Edmon Marukyan, as well as the main beneficiaries – Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ilham Aliyev,” Ghazaryan wrote.
