John Bolton joins new Turkish Democracy Project
Former U.S. national security advisor John Bolton has joined the advisory council of the newly formed Turkish Democracy Project, Ahval reports.
“It’s time to sound the alarm on Turkey,” Bolton said in a social media post announcing the move on Wednesday.
“Under an authoritarian leader, a once-reliable NATO ally is turning its back on democracy and embracing Russia. I’m pleased to join the (Turkish Democracy Project’s) advisory council to shine a light on the darkening situation.”
Officially launched on Wednesday, the Turkish Democracy Project is an international policy organisation “formed in response to Turkey’s recent turn away from democracy and toward authoritarianism”, according to its website.
Other advisory board members include former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and former Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata.
John Bolton served as national security advisor under former U.S. President Donald Trump. He subsequently criticised his former boss’ close relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, saying Trump liked to “give personal favours to dictators he liked”.
