Lawyer: ‘Disgraceful persecution’ against doctor Armen Charchyan will eventually end
The “disgraceful persecution” against prominent Armenian doctor, Armenia bloc member Armen Charchyan will eventually come to an end and all those responsible for the moral and health damage caused will be held to account, his lawyer Aram Vardevanyan said late on Thursday.
Judge Armine Meliksetyan of the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction ruled to arrest Charchyan, the head of the Izmirlian Medical Center, late on Wednesday after the latter was charged with pressuring his employees to take part in the June 20 snap parliamentary elections. His lawyers appealed the ruling to a higher court on Thursday.
They also filed an urgent motion to Prosecutor General Artur Davtyan to use his discretionary authority and remove arrest as a preventive measure after it emerged that the doctor was hospitalized shortly after the court ruling.
“I got acquainted with the clarification of the Prosecutor Gneeral’s Office published in the Haykakan Zhamanak daily. I will just say that the authors of the "clarification", devoid of minimal humanistic approaches, have nothing to do with law and the rule of law,” Vardevanyan wrote on Facebook.
“They apparently ignored even the call of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. I would just like to remind you that this disgraceful political persecution will eventually come to an end and all those responsible for the moral and health damage caused will be brought to account. Rest assured!” he said.
