Expert says new deal posing a serious threat to Armenian statehood may be ‘imposed on us’
“Armenia has long been a playing card for superpowers. The experienced leader is the one who successfully avoids it, as our position and resources should allow us to avoid such a scenario,” Armenian expert on Turkey, Doctor of History, Professor Ruben Melkonyan told a news conference on Thursday.
He indicated that the current authorities not only failed to prevent Armenia from becoming a playing card, but also led the country to a point where its sovereignty has largely been lost.
"Ironically, the authorities, that speaks of sovereignty, brought Armenia to a point where its sovereignty is lost. Now our entity-ness is at the zero level," the expert said.
Speaking about the Pashinyan-Putin meeting held in Moscow on Wednesday and a possible threat Armenia may be facing in this context, Melkonyan said that such a threat is highly predictable.
“It is anticipated that an Armenian-Azerbaijani or Armenian-Turkish agreement will be imposed on us, because all the other possible scenarios have already taken place: most of our territories are occupied, Armenia’s statehood is occupied, the country’s state borders are violated, the Azerbaijani troops are stationed here, which no one denies,” he said, adding the position expressed by Armenia's partners on the issue is aimed at preventing a further aggravation of the situation.
“Under such conditions, the only possible next challenge is an agreement posing a serious threat to the Armenian statehood,” the expert said.
