FIDE World Cup 2021 kicked off in Sochi
FIDE Men’s and Women’s World Cup started in Sochi on Sunday and will end on August 6, the National Olympic Committee reported. 206 men and 103 women will participate in the event. Regulations of the World Cup provide for elimination matches. The prize fund is record-breaking and amounts to $1,892,500 for men and $676,250 for women, the source said.
The top two finishers in the tournament, aside from World Champion Magnus Carlsen, will qualify for the Candidates Tournament 2022. The rest of the final eight qualify for the FIDE Grand Prix 2022, unless they are World Champion or qualify for the Candidates via another path.
To note, in the Men's competition Armenia is represented by five players - grandmasters Levon Aronian, Gabriel Sargsyan, Hovhannes Gabuzyan, Hayk Martirosyan and Shant Sargsyan, while in the Women’s competition Armenia is represented by Elina Danielyan.
