Opposition party member says authorities deprived Armenian people of free elections
Nikol Pashinyan could not serve as acting prime minister of Armenia after stepping down on April 25, since the resignation “implies removal of a person from office amid public pressure”, lawyer Ara Zohrabyan, a member of the Zartonk (Awakening) National Christian Party, said in his closing remarks at the Constitutional Court hearings on the opposition demands to overturn the results of last month’s snap elections on Wednesday.
He stated that the voter lists did not reflect the real picture and were inflated.
In his closing statement, Zohrabyan referred to the key issues and electoral offences outlined in their appeal, as well as the motions filed by the party.
"Misusing the administrative resources, making threats of violence, using the same electoral tools and system that they previously criticized and which they had to reform in accordance with their own legal act, the authorities have essentially deprived Armenian citizens of the opportunity to exercise their free choice,” the lawyer said.
The Constitutional Court opened hearings on the election appeals against the official results of the June 20 snap parliamentary elections on Friday. The court received separate appeals from the opposition Armenia bloc, I’m Honored bloc, Zartonk (Awakening) National Christian Party and Hayots Hayrenik (Armenian Homeland) Party last week and decided to examine them in a joint case.
