Armen Petrosyan: Azerbaijan trying to push Armenia into signing new documents
Azerbaijan is trying to push Armenia into signing new documents in a winning position, Armenian orientalist Armen Petrosyan said on Tuesday, referring to the latest developments on the Yeraskh section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
“Azerbaijan is simply doing what Armenia failed to do after its victory in 1994: it is capitalizing on its victory,” he wrote on Facebook.
Having failed to achieve a prolonged domestic political crisis in Armenia, including a scenario of a civil war, in the post-election period the Azerbaijani authorities will strive to achieve a solution of their tasks as quickly as possible through blackmail, military, political and humanitarian pressure, the expert stated.
“The most important of them are:
1. “Convincing” Armenia and the international community that the Artsakh issue is resolved, that is, not doing what Armenia did by plunging into a fruitless negotiation process.
2. Getting the "Zangezur corridor" as soon as possible in accordance with its own vision and format (railway, highway at the same time), as well as geographical boundaries and legal status. We should not forget that this issue, in addition to its pan-Turkic significance, has turned into a personal problem, another stake for Aliyev, who is still floating on air after the end of the war.
3. Starting the border demarcation and delimitation processes as soon as possible and fix their results through a peace treaty.
4. And so on ...
“What should Armenia do? Definitely not to succumb to provocations and Azerbaijani-Turkish blackmail. It should gain time as much as possible until the post-war “quartet” format (Russia- Turkey-Azerbaijan-Armenia) expands in favor of Armenia.
“To this end, it is necessary to put on the agenda and take a principled position on humanitarian issues and exclusion of border violations, and highlight the Artsakh issue. These are issues, the settlement of which provides an opportunity for other actors to get involved in the processes.
“Azerbaijan is well aware of the latest trends, new geopolitical realities and possible developments, that is why it is trying to impose documents on Armenia, being still in a position of a winner and a strong one,” Petrosyan said.
