Doctor Armen Charchyan to take up his parliament seat, lawyer says
Famous Armenian doctor Armen Charchyan, who ran for parliament on the opposition Armenia bloc’s list, is going to accept his parliament seat, his lawyer, Aram Vardevanyan, told reporters on Wednesday.
His comments came after the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction, presided over by Vahe Misakyan, ruled to release Charchyan on bail of 15 million drams, granting the defense motion.
He had been arrested on 23 June after being charged with electoral offence under Article 154.2 of Armenia’s Criminal Code.
Vardevanyan stated that the doctor faced “great injustice” for a month, but justice eventually prevailed.
“Unfortunately, it took so much time to establish justice and Professor Armen Charchyan should not have been arrested at all,” he said.
Vardevanyan said Armen Charchyan must be released immediately after posting bail.
Charchyan’s another lawyer, Erik Aleksanyan, noted that the doctor is in a good mood.
“Justice falls ill, but never dies,” he added.
