Opposition blocs to challenge election of Armenian parliament speaker in Constitutional Court
The two opposition blocs of the Armenian parliament will challenge the legality of the election of Alen Simonyan from the ruling Civil Contract Party as speaker of the National Assembly in the Constitutional Court.
Alen Simonyan received the votes of 71 MPs to be elected speaker of the new parliament on Monday.
The Armenia and I’m Honored alliances nominated Mkhitar Zakaryan and Artur Sargsyan, who are currently under arrest, for the position.
I’m Honored bloc secretary Hayk Mamijanyan and Armenia bloc secretary Artsvik Minasyan announced their plan to apply to the Constitutional Court to declare the electoral process unconstitutional at the parliament sitting on Tuesday.
Armenia bloc MP Aram Vardevanyan stated that Monday’s election took place amid procedural violations under Articles 94 and 104 of the Constitution, which are to be examined in the Constitutional Court.
