Opposition "Armenia" bloc promises 'proportionate response' to professor Armen Charchyan's arrest
"Armenia" opposition bloc has issued a statement on the court ruling the Yerevan Criminal Court of Appeals to arrest one of its lawmakers, professor Armen Charchyan. According to the statement, released on Monday, the Court presided by Judge Rubik Mkhitaryan, 'has followed the direct political instruction of Nikol Pashinyan' and 'displayed legal impunity' to arrest professor Charchyan.
"Considering arrest as the only detention measure on political cases is an accepted work-style of these authorities, which also violates the constitutional and legal principles of the person's right to freedom. This decision is conditioned by severe fears of one person," the statement said. It also noted that three members of the opposition faction are held under detention in the status of hostages on the day of adoption of the Declaration of Independce which comes to prove the authorities declaration about "public solidarity is yet another lie and fake agenda."
"It is no coincidence that this disgraceful decision was made amid the tense border situation and after the government program had been presented. Our response to this unlawfulness will be proportionate," added the statement.
To remind, The Yerevan Criminal Court of Appeals upheld an earlier ruling on Monday to arrest former Director at Izmirlyan Medical Center and lawmaker from opposition "Armenia" bloc Armen Charchyan, granting the prosecutors’ appeals against a lower court’s decision to release him from custody.
Armen Charchyan, former Director at Izmirlyan Medical Center and lawmaker from the opposition "Armenia" bloc, was arrested by Police in June, before the snap parliamentary elections for allegedly forcing his employees to take part in the elections and vote for the "Armenia" bloc.
