From Malta to Dubai: Alexey Shor’s works on international stages
The 10th edition of InClassica International Music Festival, which is currently underway in Dubai, places a special focus on works of contemporary composers. World-renowned musicians and orchestras perform pieces by both classical and contemporary composers.
Famous Maltese composer Alexey Shor is among the ones, whose works are currently performed by many internationally acclaimed soloists and ensembles, such as the Malta Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony orchestra, Armenia State Symphony Orchestra, Viva Musica, Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra, Slovak Sinfonietta and other groups.
Being a mathematician and a scientist, Alexey Shor has fully devoted himself to music. Since his youth, he has admired the classical music, and Bach has been his idol. He has started composing music since 2021 - at the age of 42.
The composer himself confesses he has started composing late, and mathematics helped him in that a lot. "I was a mathematician, which helped me a lot while composing music since it trains your memory and abstract thinking to grasp the concept and the ability to generalize it," Alexey Shor told Panorama.am reporter in the frames of the Dubai festival. The composer admits he gets excited every time when he hears live own scores being played at the concert hall, especially when those works are played by world-renowned musicians.
Alexey Shor is the Composer-In-Residence of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, who also served as the Composer-In-Residence of the Malta International Music Festival and the piano competition in 2017-2021. In 2018, Alexey Shor was awarded an honorary professorship at the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan.
Speaking of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, Shor says its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Sergey Smbatyan is one of the most talented and diligent persons he has ever known. "I consider him as a close friend of mine. The Orchestra led by him has reached a global scale. Our cooperation is amazing, and I hope it will continue," says the composer, who has offered most of his works to be played by the Orchestra.
To note, the festival concerts within the 10th edition of InClassica International Music Festival are held at the Dubai Opera and the Middle East's largest multipurpose indoor arena, Coca-Cola Arena. Participating in the festival are such prominent musicians as Denis Matsuev, Alexander Knyazev, Sergey Khachatryan, Mikhail Pletnev, Anna Tifu, Andrey Gugnin, Denis Kozhukhin, Kit Armstrong, Maxim Vengerov, who perform not only pieces by Bach, Beethoven, Verdi, Dvořák, Mendelssohn, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky and others, but also works by contemporary composers.
The festival is organized by the European Foundation for Support of Culture (EUFSC) in partnership with SAMIT Event Group.
