Siranush Sahakyan: Complaint on murder of 38 Armenian POWs filed with ECHR
A complaint on the murder of 38 Armenian prisoners of war (POWs) has been filed with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), human rights activist Siranush Sahakyan said during the presentation of the new report on state responsibility of Azerbaijan for torture and inhuman treatment of Armenian prisoners held in Baku on Wednesday.
“Apart from the issues of Armenian POWs, we have filed 38 complaints on cases of violation of the right to life. Moreover, we are studying several dozen murder cases based on preliminary facts, but are just waiting for the results of examinations," Sahakyan said.
According to her, issues of violation of the right to life are expected to be raised in connection with around 30 more cases.
"The number does not include cases of forced disappearances. In the case of a murder, we have a body, a DNA match, evidence that the people were alive in the Azerbaijani-held area, were not involved in hostilities and could not be legitimate targets, but they were arbitrarily killed, were subjected to extrajudicial executions,” the human rights activist said.
Separately, Sahakyan said they are dealing with more than 20 cases on enforced disappearances.
