Armenia faction: Security issues can be resolved only if new national government is formed
The opposition Armenia faction in the parliament on Saturday issued a statement, calling for the formation of a new national government to handle the security challenges facing the country. The full text of the statement is provided below.
"Dear compatriots, the situation on the Vorotan-Shurnukh section of the Goris-Kapan highway remains tense. Taking advantage of the connivance and criminal negligence of the Armenian authorities, Azerbaijan has set up police and customs checkpoints there.
Serious problems have arisen in terms of the use of the strategically important Iran-Armenia interstate road. Azerbaijanis collect customs duties from trucks coming from Iran. Two Iranian drivers have been detained, with their fate remaining unknown. Citizens of the Republic of Armenia, including minors, travelling on this road are subjected to psychological pressure.
Official Yerevan considers the actions of Azerbaijanis legal, referring to the maps of Soviet Azerbaijan, and considers the mentioned Goris-Kapan road section as Azerbaijani. Such an anti-state conduct of the Armenian authorities makes Baku even more impudent and pushes Azerbaijanis to new unbridled actions.
If this situation continues, the M-2 Iran-Armenia interstate road section will stop functioning, which will pose serious threats to the security of the Republic of Armenia.
On September 13, the Armenia faction in the National Assembly initiated a discussion on the situation in Syunik Province with the participation of the National Security Service director and other responsible officials. However, the parliamentary majority has not organized it so far, effectively renouncing its powers of parliamentary oversight and its obligation to be accountable to the people.
Dear compatriots, every single day of the rule of the current leaders will lead to a new crisis and new losses. Only if a new national government is formed, can security issues be resolved and a dignified peace be ensured.”
