Opposition MP: Armenian authorities obviously have something to hide
MP Tigran Abrahamyan from the opposition With Honor faction on Tuesday expressed concerns over the situation in Armenia’s Syunik Province.
“In fact, for 2-3 weeks now there has been a worrying, crisis situation in Syunik with escalation risks," he told a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Defense and Security.
Abrahamyan stated there are lawmakers who want to get clarifications on the matter from the director of the National Security Service, the defense minister and other officials.
"We have been discussing for 2 to 3 weeks what procedure can be used to summon them [to the parliament] and how to do it. MPs have been seeking to meet with these persons for three weeks to get clarifications, but to no avail,” he said.
Abrahamyan also addressed the issue in a Facebook post after the meeting. He criticized the ruling force for the failure to elect opposition candidate Artur Ghazinyan as a deputy chairman of the committee for the sixth time.
“Taking the opportunity, I once again raised the issue of summoning a number of officials, including the NSS director and the defense minister, to the parliament over the situation in Syunik,” he wrote.
“The fact that there are many questions related to this topic raises no doubts, but the authorities’ intention to prevent the security officials from appearing in the National Assembly further deepens the concerns.
“The authorities obviously have something to hide and are doing everything possible to that end,” Abrahamyan said.
