Opposition lawmaker blames authorities for failing to properly address the issue of prisoners in the trilateral statement
"Our primary task is to start discussions about the return of Armenian prisoners and civilians kept in Baku amid the new demands put forward by Azerbaijan," MP from opposition "I have Honor" faction Tigran Abrahamyan told reporters on Tuesday at parliament.
In the words of the parliamentarian, the main problem of Armenia started from the November 9 trilateral statement where no dates were fixed for the implementation of the provision on return of all detainees and prisoners unlike the point envisaging the handover of territories.
"Since Armenian authorities either didn't participate in the discussion of that document or didn't prioritize the settlement of the issues, no deadlines for return of prisoners was fixed in the document. As a result of that, Azerbaijan implemented the provision on return of captives in the post-war period amid new preconditions and pressures put forward against Armenia," said Abrahamyan.
He added that before the start of war activities, Azerbaijan sought to increase Turkey's role in the region and remove Russia from ongoing processes. "In the occurred situation, Azerbaijan works with Russia to also show that there is a leadership in Armenia which also contributes to diminishing Russia's role in the region," suggested the opposition deputy.
