Ombudsman raises the issue of Armenian prisoners and civilians at the meeting with Vatican State Secretary
Armenian Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan, who is paying visit to Vatican in the delegation of His Holiness Catholicos Karekin II, attended a meeting with the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
As the Ombudsman's Office reported, Tatoyan presented to Cardinal Pietro Parolin reports of cruel treatment, torture, and humiliation of Armenian prisoners of war and civilians documented in September-November during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war.
The Ombudsman pointed to the urgent need of return of all Armenian prisoners and civilians kept in Baku, reminding of their violated rights. Tatoyan also stressed that the captives are held in Baku for merely military-political bargaining.
During the meeting, Arman Tatoyan also informed about illegal presence of Azerbaijani forces near the inter-community roads of Armenia's borderline communities, which endangers the life and health of the peaceful population. Furthermore, as a result of incursions into the territories of Syunik and Gegharkunik provinces, incidents of thefts, threats, shootings toward civilian population and other crimes by Azerbaijanis are recorded on the border areas, Tatoyan added.
