Armenian authorities are 'very good at theatrics’ in streets, even in Yerablur, says opposition MP
The Armenian authorities have failed to conduct a threat assessment in the region, former Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan, the leader of the opposition Armenia faction, told a press briefing in the parliament on Friday.
According to the MP, the authorities use police and other security forces more often inside the country than at the borders.
"They are very good at theatrics in the streets, squares and even in Yerablur [Military Pantheon], but the same vigor is not manifested when it comes to Armenia's borders," Ohanyan said.
The lawmaker noted that his claim also refers to the period of hostilities, when, due to an “incompetent” assessment of the situation, it was not possible to exercise full control in the war.
According to him, the authorities do not yet have an assessment of the fragility of the security environment in Armenia, especially in terms of regional threats.
As Ohanyan pointed out, the authorities also do not assess the dangers of the Turkish-Azerbaijani expansionist incursion into the South Caucasus, while it was exactly what forced Iran to conduct large-scale military exercises near Armenia’s borders.
He criticized the authorities’ “unacceptable” efforts to attribute the current situation at the border to the law “On Administrative-Territorial Division”.
According to the Armenia faction head, even if the claims of the authorities are true, after 9 November the Armenian military “had no right” to hand over the strategic points, where delimitation was to be carried out in the future, to Azerbaijan.
