Armenian ombudsman raises POW issue at meeting with Anglican Church leader
As part of the delegation led by Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II, Armenia’s Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) Arman Tatoyan on Friday met with Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the spiritual leader of the Anglican Church, his office reported.
Tatoyan presented the reports on torture and ill-treatment of Armenian prisoners of war (POWs) and other captives in Azerbaijan during last year’s war and after it, providing solid evidence.
He highlighted the urgency of the release of Armenian captives held in Azerbaijan, emphasizing that the international requirements are ignored and they are being held captive for military and diplomatic bargaining.
The ombudsman also called attention to the illegal deployment of Azerbaijani servicemen on intercommunal roads in Armenia, which endangers the lives and safety of civilians.
