Yerevan court rejects request to allow MP Armen Gevorgyan to leave for Moscow
The Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction denied a motion to allow Armenia’s former Deputy Prime Minister and current MP Armen Gevorgyan to leave the country in late November.
At a hearing on Tuesday, his lawyer Lusine Sahakyan petitioned the court to either remove the restrictions on her client’s free movement or allow him to leave the country from 30 November to 3 December to attend the plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development to be held in Moscow on 1 December. Gevorgyan was expected to take part in it as part of the Armenian delegation to the PACE.
Prosecutor Petros Petrosyan objected to the motion, noting that there were still grounds for the preventive measure imposed on Gevorgyan. He argued that the lawmaker could take part in the meeting online.
Presiding judge Anna Danibekyan did not deem it necessary to consider the motion to lift the ban on Gevorgyan’s free movement. She noted that the issue had already been discussed at the previous court hearing.
Danibekyan rejected the lawyer's request to allow Gevorgyan to leave for Moscow, echoing the prosecutor’s argument.
