Pre-election silence observed in Armenia’s communities
Armenia’s communities began observing pre-election silence on Saturday ahead of the local self-government elections.
On Sunday, October 17, local elections are to be held in 9 communities of the country, including Goris, Gyumri, Meghri, Tegh, Tatev, Dilijan, Shamiram, Ferik and Fioletovo. Election campaigning and political advertising are banned on the day of silence.
As Panorama.am reported earlier, the local elections in the first 6 communities will be held under the proportional electoral system. Shamiram, Ferik and Fioletovo will hold elections under the majoritarian system.
A total of 17 parties and blocs are running in the elections, with a tough competition expected in Gyumri, where 10 political forces have joined the race.
The election observation mission will be carried out by 8 NGOs, including the Transparency International Anti-corruption Center, Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor Office, Union of Informed Citizens, Martuni Women's Community Council, Restart Gyumri Initiative Center, Women's Rights House, Direct Democracy and Progress of Gyumri Civil Society Development Center.
