Putin: Solution of border issue between Armenia and Azerbaijan requires ‘mutual compromises’
Armenia and Azerbaijan can resolve the border issue using maps of the Soviet era, but the process requires mutual compromises, Russian President Vladimir Putin told a meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club on Thursday, TASS reported.
"The most important thing now is to settle the situation on the border. And here, of course, nothing can be done without the participation of Russia. Perhaps, we don't even need anyone else here, except for the two sides and Russia. Why? We have very simple, pragmatic things here: because there are maps in the General Staff of the Russian army, which show how the border between the two Soviet republics passed in the Soviet period," Putin said.
"There are things that also require mutual compromises – somewhere to align things, somewhere to exchange things,” he noted, adding it should be beneficial to both parties.
At the same time, Putin said that Moscow is also in favor of finding a multilateral format for the settlement of the border issues, including intensifying the activity of the OSCE Minsk Group. According to him, such work is already underway and the main goal of the entire process is the “creation of a secure environment and the future building of relations in a positive way.”
