Lawyer: Armenia’s electoral system needs major changes
Arsen Babayan, a lawyer and senior member of the opposition Homeland Party, stressed the need for major changes in the electoral system of Armenia following last Sunday’s local elections.
"In Gyumri, with an officially registered population of 100,000, the mayor of the city was elected according to voting results. This mayor received only 8,000 votes,” he wrote on Facebook on Thursday.
“Please pay attention to these figures again: out of 100,000 people only 8,000 people elected a mayor. Such a terrible phenomenon has never been recorded under any government: a mayor who was elected by only 8% of the city's population. I wonder how that person will feel when he is addressed as "Mr. Mayor."
“The content and principles of the electoral system must undergo major changes,” Babayan said.
