Ombudsman reiterates urgency for creation of demilitarized zone along border with Azerbaijan
Armenia’s Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) Arman Tatoyan reiterated the urgency for the creation of a demilitarized security zone along the border with Azerbaijan as he presented a special report on the situation in border communities on Wednesday.
In Tatoyan’s words, the report substantiates the need for a demilitarized zone as a key guarantee for the rights of Armenian civilians.
“Exceptional work has been carried out based on all facts gathered. Multiple visits have been paid to the border settlements of Armenia, a year-long continuous research has been carried out in Syunik and Gegharkunik. In the report, we have weighed in on the threats, presenting concrete facts, objective evidence has been examined, all Azerbaijani positions are projected on the map," the ombudsman noted.
He underscored that the report is entirely based on open sources, and does not show Armenia's positions in any way.
"While compiling the report, we became convinced that the Armenian soldiers and border guards are carrying out a heroic service, having an exclusive mission to protect the life of the Armenian population, the right to peaceful coexistence and all other vital rights," Tatoyan said.
