Armenia requests Russia’s help amid Azerbaijani attack on country’s eastern border
Armenia requests Russia to protect its territorial integrity amid the fresh Azerbaijani attack along the eastern border section, Secretary of the Security Council Armen Grigoryan told an interview on the Public TV Company on Tuesday.
Heavy fighting is reported on the border section following the Azerbaijani provocation early on Tuesday. Four Armenian troops have been confirmed injured in the fighting.
“Since the attack is on the sovereign territory of Armenia, we appeal to the Russian Federation to protect the territorial integrity of Armenia within the framework of the 1997 agreement between Armenia and Russia and in line with the logic of fulfilling mutual obligations under the agreement,” Grigoryan stated.
The Security Council chief said that his verbal appeal would also be followed by a written one.
“If it will be possible to resolve this crisis though negotiations, we are open to it, otherwise we expect Russia to provide Armenia with sufficient military assistance so that Armenia can achieve a resolution of this situation," Grigoryan noted.
"Today's escalation is also related to Azerbaijan's use of additional armored vehicles and military personnel. They also tried to use the Azerbaijani troops already stationed on the sovereign territory of Armenia," he said.
Armenia is also working on an appeal to the CSTO, Grigoryan noted.
"Because of the situation in May we applied to the CSTO, but not enough efforts were made to resolve the problem. Armenia has taken over the CSTO chairmanship, and we will take additional steps to activate the tools within the CSTO which allow taking appropriate measures in case of any encroachment on the territorial integrity of a member state of the organization," he stated.
