Canada deeply concerned about recent Armenia-Azerbaijan border clash, FM says
Canada is deeply concerned about the recent fighting on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, Foreign Minister of Canada Mélanie Joly said on Wednesday.
“Canada is deeply concerned by the recent Armenia-Azerbaijan border clash, which resulted in the deaths of Armenian troops. Our thoughts are w/ the victims’ families, loved ones & the community. We call for de-escalation so that a peaceful solution to the conflict may be found,” she tweeted.
Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to a Russia-mediated ceasefire on Tuesday evening, ending the heavy fighting that started after Azerbaijan’s fresh attack on the Armenian positions along the eastern border section.
Tuesday’s clashes have left 13 Armenian soldiers captured, four wounded and 24 others missing. One Armenian contract soldier, identified as Meruzhan Harutyunyan, has been confirmed dead in the fighting. Armenia has also lost two combat positions, the Defense Ministry said.
