Biden hasn't invited Pashinyan to US, democracy summit will be held online, expert says
Political analyst Suren Sargsyan on Wednesday reacted to the statements that "Biden has invited Pashinyan to Washington", disappointing those “overexcited” by the news.
In an interview to the Public TV Company on Tuesday, Secretary of the Security Council Armen Grigoryan stated that Nikol Pashinyan had received an invitation from U.S. President Joe Biden to take part in the Summit for Democracy and confirmed his participation.
Asked whether the summit could become a platform for the settlement of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, Grigoryan said։ "Armenia sees the Summit for Democracy as an opportunity to strengthen democracy in the country. We will use our participation in the summit for this purpose.”
"Reports with manipulative interpretation (initiated by the Security Council secretary) were enthusiastically circulated yesterday that Pashinyan had received an invitation from Biden to attend the summit and confirmed his participation. Some reports suggested that Pashinyan was allegedly invited to the U.S. in the coming days,” the expert wrote on Facebook.
“I would like to clarify some points. First, Biden did not invite only Pashinyan, he invited leaders of over 120 countries. Second, he invited Pashinyan not to Washington, but to an online democracy summit. Third, meeting of Pashinyan and Biden is not planned,” Sargsyan noted.
He explained that the invitation was not made at the time of Tuesday’s border clashes, but a few days ago. In addition to Turkey and Azerbaijan, China, Russia, and Iran were not invited to the event either, the expert added.
“Finally, the online summit will be held not in the next few days, but on December 8-10,” Sargsyan said.
