‘It’s about starting from scratch’: MP Andranik Kocharyan comments on Russia’s demarcation and delimitation proposals
The Russian Defense Ministry has offered Yerevan and Baku to start the border demarcation and delimitation process from ground zero, Andranik Kocharyan, an MP from the ruling Civil Contract faction and head of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Defense and Security, told a briefing on Friday.
"It’s about starting the process from scratch, and Armenia has given its consent," he said in response to a question about Russia’s proposals on the preparatory stage of demarcation and delimitation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.
Chairman of the parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Relations Eduard Aghajanyan, in turn, said Armenia has notified Russia of its consent to work on the preparatory stage.
The Armenian side is ready to set up a relevant commission and start the main process as soon as it reaches an agreement on several technical issues, he added.
Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Thursday, Nikol Pashinyan said: “Since May, 2021 there’ve been three proposals from the Russian Federation on demarcation and delimitation of the borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and all three were basically acceptable for us and continue being acceptable.”
“After my statements yesterday, the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation made proposals regarding a preparatory phase for demarcation and delimitation. I’d like to reaffirm that these proposals are acceptable for us,” Pashinyan noted, instructing Defense Minister Suren Papikyan to clarify the details with his Russian counterpart to start the process.
